Outreach Information & Resources

The QRA provides information and resources useful for secondary and tertiary education as well as containing material and links of more general interest. Many of the weblinks have been chosen to be useful for A-level teaching in the subjects of geography and geology. Information and links are listed below.

English Landscape & Geology

This site developed by Natural England contains various maps of England on which are referenced all NNRs, SSSIs and other designated areas of geological or ecological importance. In addition to showing the location of such areas, the site also contains linked descriptions and photos. Many of the designated areas on the map have Quaternary significance.

Revision of the base of the Quaternary

This link is for the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy. It contains links to the recent documentation associated with the 2009 revision to the geological timescale in which the base of the Quaternary Period and the Pleistocene Epoch are now officially recognised at 2.6 million years ago.

Ice & our Landscape

British Geological Survey site that provides an introduction to the impact of glaciers on the British landscape.

Ancient Human Occupation of Britain

Website of a major research project funded by the Leverhulme trust that is investigating ancient humans from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic northern Europe.

VR Glaciers and Glaciated Landscapes

Our virtual field trips allow you to explore the fascinating and often spectacular world of glaciers and glaciated landscapes. Look all around and zoom-in on features of interest – rather like Google Streetview © – and see how the landscape changes from one location to the next.

Antarctic Glaciers

This website aims to promote the science of Antarctic glaciology and to disseminate the findings to a wider community. The site focuses on published, peer-reviewed literature and includes accessible information on Antarctica, Glaciers & Climate, Modern Glaciers and Glacial Geology. The site is supported by the QRA.

BRITICE Glacial Map

This link to the BRITICE Glacial Map displays landforms left behind by the ice sheet that covered most of Britain & Ireland during the last glacial maximum.

Bogology

An online learning resource about peatland ecosystems and their potential to tell us about past climate and environmental change
